1.To abandon oneself to… 纵情于…,沉溺于…,肆意…

e.g.  At the harvesting time, most of the villagers would abandon themselves to wining, eating and even singing folk songs after dark.


2.To be abashed at… 因…而感到惭愧、窘迫、不好意思

e.g. Sandra was very abashed at the sight that all the participants were wearing a formal dress while she was in mini-skirt.


3.To take up one’s abode with/in…  和…住在一起;住在…

e.g. Sandra’s mother became very much abashed at the news that her daughter has taken up her adobe with a guy she got acquainted with only recently.


4.To abound in/with… 充满,盛产…;有大量的…

e.g. Rare and precious herbal plants abound in the mountains to the north of this small city, and the deep valleys to the west of the city abounds with hot springs.


5.To keep abreast of/with… 与…并驾齐驱;跟得上…

e.g. To survive in a world full of intense competition, an enterprise must keep abreast with the most advanced development in its field.


6.To absolve sb. from/of… 免除(解除,宽恕)某人的…

e.g. The president intends to absolve Frank from his present posts as the manager of the production section, but he doesn’t have the heart to degrade him, as he had contributed a lot to the development of the Group.


7.To be absorbed in… 专心于…,全神贯注于…沉醉于…

e.g. The professor is completely absorbed in the subject of this research and the writing of books on the subject, and nothing seems to be able to get him sidetracked.


8.To abstract sb.’s attention from… 转移某人对… 的注意力

e.g. Nothing seems to be able to abstract the professor’s attention from his research subject.


9.To heap abuse on… 辱骂,谩骂,责骂…

e.g. Soon after George’s News Comment was out of print, many artists and people engaged in acting, dancing and singing began to heap abuse on him. They simply went mad and their rage is like anything.


10.To have access to… 能够进入,使用,得到,获得…

e.g. There are only a few colleges in China whose students have access to such magazines as Time, Newsweek, Economists and New York Post.


11.To accommodate oneself to… 使自己适应于…

e.g. You must learn to accommodate yourself to your surroundings before you are able to find a common ground with people from all walks of life.


12.To be accomplished in… 擅长于…;在…方面很有成就

e.g. Thomas is very much accomplished in the studies of Chinese literature and his recent book on Chinese modern literature is much acclaimed in the field.


13.To do sth of one’s own accord 自愿干某事,主动干某事

e.g. You offered to help her of your own accord and now you complain about the time you have spent in helping her. Put that in your pipe and smoke it and you may then realize who are in the wrong.


14.To leave sth out of account 忽视了某事;没想到,没料到

e.g. When he was preparing the examination paper, he had left the level of the examinees out of account. As a result, most examinees complain about the contents of the paper.


15.To bring an accusation against… 控诉…,指控…

e.g. At present, there are more and more countries which being an accusation against the U.S. Government in their attempt to monopolize the market of computer technology.


16.To accuse sb. of doing sth 控告、指责某人做某事

e.g. Many parents accuse school teachers of their indifference to their children’s psychological development.


17.To accustom oneself to … 使自己习惯、适应于…

e.g. To move to live in another country is easy, but it’s by no means easy to accustom oneself to the new culture and the new way of life of the country.


18.To be acknowledged as… 被公认为是…

e.g. Freud is universally acknowledged as the most accomplished man in the field of psychology and the contribution of his psychoanalysis to the development of many areas, including literature and education is also universally acclaimed.


19.To acquaint oneself with… 认识,熟悉,了解…

e.g. If you go to work in a new place, you will have to acquaint yourself with not only the work routines and the company’s culture but also the people that are already working there.


20.To act on the square to… 以诚相待…

e.g. I am not sure of his honesty and I know he is not appreciative of my help, but still I will act on the square to him.
